Firefighters were called to an early Saturday morning fire that was initially reported as a tree fire at the intersection of Espina Street and Missouri Avenue. Just after 1 a.m., arriving units discovered heavy fire conditions inside a commercial structure on the 1700 block of S. Espina Street prompting a first alarm response.
A second alarm was transmitted as the fire in the structure grew rapidly and more resources were needed. Firefighters used multiple attack lines to extinguish the fire. A limited search for people resulted in no civilians located in the building.
The fire was brought under control within an hour and no injuries were reported. Twenty-eight firefighters responded to this incident.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage estimates have yet to be reported. There have been multiple fires in this abandoned building over the last several years.
