The shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. Thursday across from Lynn Middle School; police say the officer was not injured
A Las Cruces police officer shot and killed a man early Thursday morning on Walnut Street, across from Lynn Middle School. A second man was also shot and sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 a.m. Thursday on the 900 block of Walnut Street. The officer was not injured, according to a statement from the Las Cruces Police Department.
The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave — a standard procedure when someone is killed by police.
Few details have been released, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities said additional information will be made public as appropriate.
The incident did not occur on school property, but Walnut Street remains closed in front of Lynn Middle School while investigators process the scene. Bus and parent drop-off is being redirected to the northwest side of campus, near the gym, with access from Nevada Avenue.
The multi-agency task force investigating the shooting includes representatives from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police. Their findings will be forwarded to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review.
